Me and Dewey #5
(September 2006a)

Mom's garden wilted!  Not all, but lots of it did.  Mom says it was 'cause of the cold, but I didn't feel cold when I went outside.I   think monster squirrels got to it and scared it - and it's my fault 'cause I wasn't guarding it good enough.  I was sleeping.

Mom says I am a type-A dog and need to play more, but playing isn't in my job description.  Guarding and keeping safe is my job.  Especially now that Dewey thinks he's old enough to retire. He's useless almost.'cept at night.  He stays awake while I sleep.  Dogs have to sleep sometime!  I think the squirrels scared the garden to death when Dewey was the dog on watch!

Just look at these pictures.  Dewey spends his time smelling the flowers and wandering through the garden (before the squirrels got to it).  Sight seeing, playing, sleeping - useless things to do!

Meanwhile, I am working hard, staying alert to keep those squirrels away from the garden.

I can't be awake 24/7!

Mom says I have a Martha complex, that I NEED to learn to smell the flowers, too.  But they just make me sneeze!  (She also says I just used to many of these puncuation things !!!!!!!.  But I don't care!)

Spirit not-P

P.S.  Mom read my column to Dewey (he doesn't read as well as I do!), and he SCOLDED me.  He said he thought he'd taught me how important that "P" initial is - not only does it mean "PET", but it also means "PLAY."  Dewey said that playing is very important - like laughing is for people.  It calms the stress we all have.  He said noplay is why I have been so tired lately.

Maybe he is right.  I have caught myself sleeping on the job.  And I haven't been as happy as I was when Mom took us for lots of walks (HEAR THAT MOM?).  Dewey said that Mary people like himself know that time for play and sitting and listening and smelling flowers is as important as time spent gaurding.

So you think the reason I let the monster squirrels get the garden is that I had been refusing to play?  (Any answers will be dealt with in the late-Sept. issue - Mom.)

Me and Dewey #6
(September 2006b)

Mom says I can’t dig so many holes next year, but if Dewey needs the holes to keep cool, I will dig dog holes! (You can see my dog holes in ME AND DEWEY #4! )

Mom went to the dirt store and bought dirt  .She plans to put dirt in the holes and expects me to leave it there.  But it is SO much easier digging up dirt that is nice and soft - it was a hard job digging up the dry dirt that the drought out here made.  So why can't I have it easy for a change?

My friends on PUTTING_ON_THE_DOG at ecunet.org are trying to help me understand why Mom is mad at me about digging dog holes.

Casper said I should think about the trees.  Trees need dirt like I need dog food.  They need to stay warm in the winter like I do - that why I grow lots more hair in the winter.  How can dirt that cools me off in the summer keep the trees warm in the winter?

Dewey just said that dog hair keeps use cool in the summer, then we change the dog hair (called shedding) and we put on a new dog hair coat to keep us warm in winter.  He should know!  He is part Husky and always sheds.  Mom has to keep brushing him.  He says it hurts, but I really like brushing!

He thinks that dirt out keeps cool and dirt in keeps warm.  So if the dirt is out for the tree in the winter it is too cool and might catch a cold. . . . and if it caught a cold it won't make shade for us when the sun is bright.  If we aren't nice to the tree, why should the tree be nice to us?  I have to think about this one.

Mom bought more dirt at the dirt store. She didn't have enough dirt.   I did a really good job making dog holes!  I also dug the hole again in front of the gate so I can hide when I bark at the squirrels!Mom says I can't hide so well in the winter time because the flowers won't be there to hide under.Squirrels won't be able to hide in the leaves either. That isn't as much fun.I like trying to find the one who are trying to sneak up on me.Mom just said "Please don't dig that hole in front of the gate."

Oops - I forgot and dug a hole. The dirt was so nice and soft and went flying REALLY well.

Mom bought more dirt at the dirt store. . . . I felt sad but dug the hole again.Mom went to the dirt store again and frowned at me . . .

Then I listen to another friend from PUTTING_ON_THE_DOG.She talked about the word "present" instead of "now."I talked a lot about NOW in my other letter about dog holes.NOW means you just do what you want NOW and don't think at all about what might happen (like Mom getting mad when you dig the same dog hole for the third time!).PRESENT means you think about other things too - like Mom's face if I dig up that dog hole for a fourth time.

I guess I won't dig up this dog hole for a fourth time - at least until next summer!
